As a High Sierra lifeguard, you’ll learn to make split-second, lifesaving decisions while also learn valuable life skills. Those who shine as lifeguards can rise through the ranks at High Sierra Pools, earning promotions to pool manager, area supervisor and more.

Be ready to save a life

When you become a lifeguard, you will:

  • Prevent, recognize and respond to injuries in and out of the water
  • Ensure safety and enforce facility safety rules
  • Keep pool area clean and safe
  • Record and measure chemicals

Learn how to save a life

The American Red Cross lifeguard training program will teach you key lifesaving skills, including:

  • Water rescue
  • First Aid
  • CPR
  • Surveillance — to help you recognize and prevent injuries
  • Conflict resolution — to enhance your interactions with patrons

Lifeguarding is more than sitting in a chair — it’s a resume builder

The Lifeguard responsibilities and skills include:

  • Leadership
  • Problem-solving
  • Communication
  • Teamwork

Certification requirements

As part of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course, all individuals will need to:

  • Swim 300 yards without stopping.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using the legs only.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds as follows:
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.
  • Surface dive, feet- or head-first to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to the starting point with both hands holding the object at or near the surface of the water.
  • Exit the water with the object without using a ladder or steps
